So, AppleCare update:
They sent my old creeky iBook G4 back in about 48 hours, with a new optical drive, as promised, as well as an unplanned little thingy--a new HD. WITH NONE OF MY OLD DATA ON IT. Oh, and the 1GB RAM chip was out, but I should've remembered to do that myself before I sent it. So, I got a streamlined, uncluttered, brand-new, three year-old iBook! Over the past few days I've put everything back, except for the iLife 06 stuff, and it's pretty much good to go. But I miss all my old emails and address book. Everything else was well backed-up, especially those precious recordings of songs(!).
